A new build or renovation is not finished when the last trade packs up. Fine drywall dust, stickers, paint specks, and debris can hold up a final walkthrough, a closing, or a tenant move-in. This checklist covers what a thorough post-construction clean should include, so you can plan it, schedule it at the right time, and hand over a space that looks finished.
Rough Clean vs. Final Clean
Most projects go best with two passes:
- Rough clean (during construction): removes framing cutoffs, drywall scraps, packaging, and loose debris so trades can work safely and the next phase starts on a clean floor.
- Final clean (after the last trade): the detailed pass that gets the space ready for the owner walkthrough, inspection, or move-in.
Schedule the final clean only after flooring, paint, electrical, and plumbing punch-list items are done. Cleaning before the last trade finishes usually means paying to clean twice.
The Final Clean Checklist
Dust Removal (Top to Bottom)
Construction dust is fine enough to settle everywhere, and it keeps falling for days. Always work from the ceiling down.
- HEPA-vacuum ceilings, light fixtures, and ceiling fans
- Wipe air vent covers and returns
- Dust crown molding, door frames, trim, and window sills
- Wipe walls where dust has collected
- Clean baseboards last, after everything above them
Windows and Glass
- Remove manufacturer stickers and protective film
- Scrape paint overspray and adhesive residue without scratching the glass
- Clean interior glass and frames
- Vacuum debris from window tracks
Kitchens and Breakrooms
- Remove stickers and protective film from appliances
- Wipe cabinets inside and out, including drawers and shelves
- Clean and polish countertops and backsplashes
- Clean sinks and fixtures, removing grout haze and caulk residue
Bathrooms and Restrooms
- Remove grout haze from tile
- Clean and polish fixtures, mirrors, and glass
- Wipe cabinets, partitions, and accessories
- Clean toilets and sinks that collected dust during construction
Floors
- Vacuum carpet with a HEPA vacuum to capture fine dust
- Sweep and damp-mop hard floors
- Remove paint specks, caulk, and adhesive from floor surfaces
- Do a final floor pass after all other cleaning is finished
Final Walkthrough Prep
- Remove remaining debris, packaging, and trash from the site
- Wipe light switches, outlet covers, and door hardware
- Walk every room with the punch list before the owner or inspector arrives
Common Mistakes That Delay Handover
- Cleaning too early. If a trade comes back after the final clean, dust comes back with them.
- Skipping the HEPA vacuum. Ordinary vacuums blow fine drywall dust back into the air, and it settles again overnight.
- Leaving the high spots. Vents, fans, and fixtures are where inspectors and owners notice dust first.
- Scratching glass. Removing paint and adhesive takes the right blades and technique.
When to Book Your Post-Construction Clean
Book your cleaning crew about one to two weeks before you expect the last trade to finish. That gives you time to confirm the scope, and lets the crew plan the right team size so the final clean fits between the last trade and your walkthrough.
